MOPS AND COPS
Batya Lederfein

"Curiouser and curiouser!" cried Alice (she was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English). "MOPs and COPs" - the latest directive from the Ministry about the way we're supposed to teach grammar at the Foundation Level - certainly sounds strange! Let's try to understand what it means by studying a children's story in Spanish!

What Can We Learn From The Research?
Penny Ur

What can we learn from the research? Not all academic research is interesting to teachers. But in this session I've picked out a few research studies I've read recently that I found interesting, thought-provoking, sometimes surprising … and that I think teachers - particularly junior high-school teachers, but not only! - would enjoy hearing about.

When Hell Freezes Over: Teaching Idiomatic Expressions
Neri Sevenier

Idiomatic expressions are tricky to identify, understand and translate, because they defy lexical meaning and require cultural knowledge and linguistic finesse. My Bilingual Thesaurus of Idioms and Phrases will be briefly presented, then used for some insights into the nature of idioms and suggestions on how to teach them.

Room 421

What Do New English Teachers Want From A Mentor Relationship?
Shoshana Plavin

This talk will examine the issues impacting on the mentoring relationship during the induction year based on research in the Israeli context in particular. In addition, suggestions for becoming a more effective mentor will be explored.

Room 410

Authentic Voices in the Spotlight
Reina Reiner

Creating theater is an artistic activity which reflects a society reacting to political and social events. The ensemble creating theater engages in "make believe" situations based on real life experiences through symbols and signs. Presenting authentic experiences and voices in this way empowers both creators and spectators alike.

Session II 11:00 - 12:00

EL

Room 422

Classroom Management in the Elementary School
Elana Cheshin

This presentation focuses on issues of classroom management. Teachers will be provided with recommended strategies for creating a positive learning environment. The essential components that are required in order to create such an environment will be examined.

Getting Excited About Reading Through A Book Club
Ahuva Kellman

A Book Club was developed at Bar Lev Junior High School in Kfar Saba. Sets of readers were bought for the 8th grade classes and a lesson a week was dedicated to reading and reading activities What we found out was that the pupils enjoyed the Book Club and this experience contributed to reading more books in class.

Missed The Diagnosis - Now What?
Tzafi Timor

The most critical aspect for any learning-disabled student who reaches high school undiagnosed is how to gain access to school curicculum. Even with a much higher awareness, the educational system cannot meet the special needs of an individual student and offer him remedial help unless he was properly assessed. Indeed, diagnosis is the missing link in the process of inclusion.

AC

Room 403

Literature in a Foreign Language: A Critical Necessity
Amos Paran

Arguments regarding the role of literature in foreign language teaching and learning have normally been conducted on a theoretical level, with little reference to actual research. In this presentation I discuss the theoretical argument as it has evolved recently, and go on to provide research evidence for the importance of literature in language learning.

G

Room 301

Collaborative Writing and Technology - Two Case Studies
Micki Zaritsky and Gail Shuster-Bouskila

The Israeli EFL curriculum requires students to produce expository essays. In our experience students don't make enough use of "process writing".We designed a task emphasizing the collaborative aspect of brainstorming and revision by using online collaboration activities. We will describe two classes and discuss the implications for implementation.

Closing Session 13:30 - 14:30

Film in the ELT classroom
Helen Sykes

This presentation aims to dispel the myth that film in the ELT classroom is a waste of time. I will offer practical suggestions for using both full length films and film extracts in a stimulating way, revealing how film can be an easily accessible, motivating and versatile medium. I will explore ways that film can be used to both support teaching language systems (grammar, lexis, etc.) and as the main focus of a skills based lesson (listening, speaking and writing).

Message from the Chair

Dear Teachers,
Spring is a special time and our Spring conference has a special format. In Spring we invite speakers to create a unique program. Please note that for each session there is a presentation particularly suited to each level: elementary, junior high, high school, college and one presentation of general interest. Dr. Judy Steiner will be addressing the plenary and the closing session on using film in the classroom will give us inspiration for motivating the students until the last day of the semester.

Our Forum gets better and better. This is thanks to Judy Yaron, our hard working editor, and you, the teachers, who share your ideas and classroom tips and your professional expertise with our members. Please send all new contributions to Judy Yaron [judyyaron@yahoo.com] for inclusion in the summer edition.

On behalf of all of you, I would like to thank Sharon Azaria, Spring Conference

Convener and her excellent committee.

See you at Talpiot,
Susan Holzman
