Pipes of Peace - by Paul McCartney
submitted by Adele Raemer - raemer@nirim.co.il

I light a candle to our love
In love our problems disappear
But all in all we soon discover
That one and one is all we long to hear.

All 'round the world      5
Little children being born to the world
Got to give them all we can 'til the war is won
Then will the work will be done.

Help them to learn
Songs of joy instead of burn baby burn      10
Let us show them how to play the pipes of peace
Play the pipes of peace.

Help me to learn
Songs of joy instead of burn baby burn
Won't you show me how to play the pipes of peace?      15
Play the pipes of peace.

What do you say?
Will the human race be run in a day?
Or will someone save this planet we're playing on?
Is it the only one?      20
What are we going to do?

Help them to see
That the people here are like you and me
Let us show them how to play the pipes of peace
Play the pipes of peace.      25

I light a candle to our love
In love our problems disappear
But all in all we soon discover
That one and one is all we long to hear.

I. General questions:

  1. What do you think this song is about?
  2. Do the words match the melody? What does the melody do for the song?
  3. Were there any words that you didn't know? Did you look them up? Understand them from the context? Ignore them? (Is that wise?)

II. Specific questions:

  1. What are the "Pipes of Peace"? What types of pipes are they? What associations do you have?
  2. What does he mean when he says: "one and one is all we long to hear" (l.4)
  3. "Will the human race be run in a day?" (l.18) How can you explain this line?
  4. Can you see a progression in this song? Does anything change?

III. Grammar point:

  1. Find all of the instances of the passive in this song.
  2. Transpose them into active.
  3. Why do you think they were written in the passive?

Remember what we learnt about when to use passive:
  • When the doer is unknown or unimportant/irrelevant.
  • When the speaker wishes to emphasize the receiver of the action.
  • When the speaker wishes to express an objective or popular opinion, universally accepted idea (not necessarily his own)

Be ready to report your findings to the rest of the class.
