Friendship
by Michele Ben

After reading the story "Over The Bridge" in Radio Fever, we spent a lesson discussing friendship. I did this lesson in a heterogeneous 8th grade class, but it could be used at just about any level.

Do Now: In a few sentences, describe a good friend.
The kids wrote for a few minutes, and then we discussed what they wrote. I wrote different points up on the board. We noticed that most kids had written similar things like listening to each other, mutual support, spending time together etc.

Development: Listen to "Bridge over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkle. Follow along reading the lyrics.
We then discussed the song and the metaphor of a bridge for friendship. A bridge gives support. We compared the song to their own conceptions of friendship.

We then listened to "You've Got a Friend" by Carole King. They did a close exercise while listening to the song. (To save paper, I ran off the two songs on opposite sides of the page.)

We then compared the two songs.

I didn't give HW for this lesson. A follow-up writing activity could be to make a table of similarities and differences between the songs. HW could be to find a song you like about friendship and bring it in.

If someone wants the music, you can contact me and send me a cassette and I'll record it for you.
