Using Songs in Literature Assignments
by Judi Granit

After teaching 5 poems to my yod-bet 5 points class I gave them a literature assignment that worked pretty well and I'd like to share with you.

I asked them to find a song (pop or otherwise) or different poem that they feel was connected with one of the poems we had studied. (When teaching the poems I had used a couple of songs which were connected by theme and we had discussed the similarities and differences). They were allowed to choose a song in Hebrew provided that they translated it into English. They had to write a compare and contrast essay comparing their song/poem that they had found to one of the poems we had studied. In addition to the essay they had to hand in a copy of the song or poem that they used.

The kids came up with great ideas, for example:

  • someone used the song "I Did it My Way" with "The Road Not Taken";
  • "Stopping by Woods" was compared with a great song by Arik Einstein "Pesek Zman";
  • "Walking Away" was compared to the song 17 by Shlomo Artzi written about his son;
  • Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 was compared to "My love is like a red, red rose" by one pupil and a song by Zoar Argov by another;
  • "Hope is thing with feathers" was compared and contrasted to a poem by a German poet Muller which one pupil found on the internet and the Hebrew song "I have a little bird in my heart".

It was a great assignment that the pupils enjoyed and was also a pleasure for me to check. Highly recommended!!
