STAGE ONE:
I started the project by eliciting a list
of different types of music from the students. I wrote the list on the
board and we had a discussion on the types of music, who listens to them,
radio stations, etc.
I then asked the students to write a pargraph
or two about music in general. The variety of responses I got was great,
everything from The Arad Festival to favourite bands, etc.
STAGE TWO:
We discussed Concert Posters. I again elicited
a list on "requirements" for a concert poster (what information we usually
see).
They came up with:
-
Name of the Band/Singer
-
Name of the Tour
-
Date of concert
-
Location of concert
-
Where tickets are available
-
Dates of ticket sales
-
Age of entry
-
Cost of ticket
-
Type of music
STAGE THREE (I
haven't gotten here yet, so I have no idea how it will work!)
Students will pick a song and write out
the lyrics in English. Most CD's come with the words, so all they need
to do is copy them. Someone also suggested using the lyrics site on the
Net. Students can/will make up a worksheet/cloze for the song. They will
present parts of the song to the class. When they hand in the lyrics, I
will also ask them to explain why they chose the song, what it means to
them etc.
SUGGESTIONS:
-
Choose a story with a certain message and
a song with the same message. Have the students discover the connection.
(This was used in the movie "Dangerous
Minds", the "Dylan/Dillon" contest)
-
Read a story and choose music to accompany
it.
-
Create a PowerPoint presentation on a favourite
band/singer.
-
Create a collage of lyrics on a certain topic.
-
Show the class the movie "Amadeus", stopping
it and having them predict, reenact, etc.
-
Video tape/ audio tape, students talking about
their favourite band.
-
Have the student "interview" a famous musician.
I am sure that there are a million other
things which can be done with this topic.
If you have any other ideas, please feel
free to add them to the list.
ENJOY!!!
