She didn’t cry
When they removed
her clothes, her ring
her shoes, her hair.
But when they took away
her name
She wept
          ~ Anna Sotto

I write it on the board, and OMIT all of the underlined items (leaving just a blank space, or an empty line).

Questions:

1.     What do you think it was that was taken away from her , but did NOT make her cry?

2.     What do you think was taken away from her and DID make her cry in the end?

3.     What title would you give to this poem?

You can either have them brainstorm , or think first on their own, then in pairs,  then share with the rest of the class (the term for this escapes me for the moment)

In response to question one, write all possible answers on the board – to legitimize them all.

Follow the same procedures for questions 2 and 3.
