BUSH
speech from the Center of Islam in Washington DC
Adele Raemer
These are two different activities based on the same speech. You will probably NOT want to do them both - choose according to the time you have at your disposal or the type of work your class needs.
I developed the two activities after preparing the jigsaw reading, and not leaving them enough time to finish it (only one period) - but still wanting to get my point across.
I. Jigsaw Activity
(You will need both files for this activity- takes 2 lessons) The entire transcript and the questions on pages for group work. The teacher needs the entire transcript for herself, and makes up one or two questions pages per group. The speech, broken up into 4 sections- one for each group.
II. Listening Comprehension Activity
(One file: can be done in a single lesson) Entire transcript (to be read out by the teacher- unless someone happens to have recorded it from the television) and comprehension questions that accompany it, 10 questions- pupils answer individually. In addition- keep your eyes peeled and video tapes ready: the CNN has done many pieces on the way the Japanese were treated in America in W.W.II - I am sure there are other relevant programs on other channels that are connected to the topic, as well.
