The war and us - Facing North - Ideas
Here are some ideas I had on how to relate to the post-war situation in the north. They're not necessarily for the first few lessons, but we can face north during the whole school year.
These aren't handouts, only ideas to trigger our minds ,to promote content based learning.
If any of them inspires you, I'd love to know what you did /intend to do with it and maybe even find ways to co-operate.
My target audience is Junior-High students in the central area of Israel and the following is based to the themes of the 7th grade's text book – TAKE ACTION, but it could be used for higher grades.
Merav Jerafi-Hochmitz
Who am I:
- Reading and writing fact files about people connected to the war/ north.
When revising "personal details" with 7th graders at the beginning of the year, we're going to discuss relevance of information in different circumstances, relate to families from the north who were looking for a place to stay during the war (we can use personal experiences that students may have had). As a performance task, the kids will plan and prepare a form that will assist matching hosting families, fill in details of imaginary families and try to match them. (We'll introduce/review vocabulary, review the formation of questions and answering them - present simple + promote awareness to the differences and similarities in our culture as it is reflected in times of need)
Celebrations:
Going Places:
- Getting to know the north – planning a trip, preparing a brochure… (The students learn about the north in L1 during geography lessons in the 6th grade.) We could ask students to bring pictures from their family trips to the north and explain what they saw/did or describe what they're doing in the picture …[Present progressive/past simple, adjectives]
Save our Planet:
Solving Problems:
- Finding out the needs in the north solutions to how to assist, / asking the students to compose games and game-like activities about locations in the north.
